What Do You Say?  (written November 2001)

I saw you stand up and hoe your garden

Clear out the dead that weighs down the growth

I saw you look ahead in the distance

Without feeling sad and lonely to loathe

I heard you smile that way

That way you always know

When I don’t mean what I say

But it’s time to sow your own

And let me go dancing in my way

Here inside me

I see through you

Here inside me

I don’t know you

And every time we try to talk about it

The words get in the way

And your defenses go up

While my weapons are at bay

What do you say?

What do you say?

I grew up

Always knowing

That I could always be growing

It’s not my fault, I know we’re equal

I love you and that’s the way it should be

I can’t be what you expect to happen

There is a story for me untold

I just open up and follow the plot line

I guess for you that’s just to bold

You are beautiful in so many ways

But you don’t even know it or

You think I don’t mean what I say

It’s time for you to acknowledge the fact

That if you trust yourself

Then you don’t have to act

You just do

You just are

You just be

Who you are

Here inside me

Boy, I love you

Here inside me

I do know you

And every time we try and

Talk about it

Those thoughts

Get in the way

And our defenses go up

While my weapons are at bay

What do you say?
